Just cross posting what i posted in a forum.
Ok i was having this discussion with my mum yesterday. On the 9th of Jan my parents have to stay overnight in Wolverhampton for some wedding do. I can't go someone has to stay and be with the dogs. Now i'm happy to look after the dogs don't get me wrong. But i was like telling my mum 'cant we find some hotel that allows pets so we can take them with us' and my mum was like 'they'll get sick, like they did in the kennels'
So i didn't argue with her. But i wanna know what you think? Could it happen?
do'nt get me wrong i'm happy to stay with the dogs, if i wasn't, i wouldn't be a dog owner. But i feel terribly left out and i wanna enjoy the party tooCan dogs pick up infections and illnesses in pet friendly hotels like they can in kennels?
If your dogs are UTD on their vaccinations and on flea preventative, they have about the same chance of getting sick in a dog-friendly hotel room as they do at your local park or on a walk around the block. The risk is there...but it's no greater than the risk of taking your dog for a walk where other dogs have been.
Kennels keep a lot of dogs, usually in pretty close quarters. That's the perfect environment for things to be passed from dog to dog, so I think the risk of a dog getting sick in a kennel is higher than in most other situations.
I have stayed with my dogs at many pet-friendly hotels and vacation homes and never had a problem. Can dogs pick up infections and illnesses in pet friendly hotels like they can in kennels?
well as long as your dog or dogs has all there shots done there should be not problem with them staying in the kennels. But i would go to the vet to get the dogs needles regarding kennel cough. If it was a case in which you had the dogs in kennels before well than she might be right. I would go and chcheckut kennels in your area and see what you think if them. good luck with this
It all depends on how well the kennels/cages are cleaned and also if a water bowl from a sick animal was not disinfected and put in with another animal.
they can pick up things anywere other dogs go so yes it is possible but no more risky than taking them out on a walk.
dependS on your dog's immunity and vaccination
yes
If you are unfortunate enough to occupy a room where the previous people had a dog, and it was sick, quite possibly. Kennel Cough, for example, is very infectious and I imagine if a dog with Parvo had been in there before you, that could also be picked up. But if your dog(s) are vaccinated, the risk should be minimal. And probably less than going into a boarding kennel where you know there are other dogs, current or in the past! Most good BKs should clean thoroughly on a change-over however.
ps We will be staying overnight in a Travelodge soon with our ******, and you've made me worried...... lol
i don't think they would necessarily get sick... i took my dog on holiday to a caravan in cornwall and she didn't get sick! kennels are worse due to the number of dogs and the fact they tend to kennel them outside... the option you haven't thought about it a house sitter... someone who stays at yours and keeps the dogs in the same environment and same routine... or ask a friend to stay or have them, someone who doesn't want to go to the do! i would have them all here!! but alas, i am in Bristol so its not very practical!
